Livity Africa is a non profit organisation based in Cape Town, South Africa. It was launched in 2011. Livity Africa publishes the Live Magazine SA which is a nationwide youth‐run media channel that helps springboard young people into full‐time paid employment. Livity provides vocational, on‐the‐job training in journalism, media, marketing, digital skills and business entrepreneurship, producing content that is of industry standard. The essence of Livity Africa is ultimately “For the youth, by the youth.” The Shuttleworth Foundation supported in establishing Livity Africa in Cape Town. Young people who serve as interns at Livity Africa help prepare and publish the Live Mag SA with the mentorship of employed industry professionals. These interns work closely with the mentors in producing the journals. Interns are recruited in badges, four times a year. These interns serve a 3-month period at Livity Africa of which an issue of the Live Mag SA should be out within the timeframe of the badge of the interns. Currently in production stages is the Live Mag SA issue 10. Livity Africa has over 30 workers at a point in time, most of them being interns. As a developmental agency for the youth, Livity Africa focuses on campaigns and creations to challenge the youth to influence social change. Livity Africa has made success stories since the start of the Live Mag SA. Major funding for Livity Africa came from the Shuttleworth Foundation which is a South African based social innovation foundation – in the form of a three-year fellowship awarded to Gavin Weale, managing director of Livity Africa. The funding is planned to end before March 2014. Livity Africa is seeking new funding partners with an interest in directly benefiting South African youth. Livity Africa was started with the aim of helping put young creative South African a platform and to give young people between the ages of 18 and 25 a chance to gain valuable experience and create influential content that is seen by hundreds of thousands of their peers. Livity is different in that they produce magazines, in print and digital forms. It is widely known and mainly recognised as an organisation with its magazine in such platforms in South Africa that provide young people a voice on a national scale.
